The third annual Math and Science Institute for grades 6-12 mathematics and science educators will be on July 23 - 25, 2007 at St. Martin's Episcopal School, 5309 Airline Blvd, Metairie, 70003. This year's institute will feature extended sessions spread out over the three-day institute in a variety of subjects and contributed talks given by institute participants. Sessions will be offered for both middle and secondary level mathematics and science educators. The institute will afford participants many networking opportunities. Educators will have opportunities to explore the latest educational technology available. Participants can learn more about Geometer's Sketchpad, Cabri Jr , Tinker Plots, TI Navigator, and a variety of other technology tools. Registration is through July 10, 2007 via the website http://msi.promotinglearning.com.
Featured speakers will be : Bruce Baguley of Cascade Math Systems, an interactive computer learning tool, Ellen Johnston of Texas Instruments, author of Discovering Mathematics TI-73 grades 7 & 8, and Data Collection Activities / TI-73 for CBL and CBR, Terry Green of Texas Instruments and former mathematics specialist for project SEED, Tony Becker , Rhodes College, Department of Biology, Boris Korsunsky of Weston High School, Weston MA and former coach of the US Physics Olympiad team, David Young of Fayetteville High School, Fayetteville AR and former presenter at the Woodrow Wilson Institute, Audrey Weeks of Algebra & Calculus in Motion, Burbank CA and author of dynamic animations for the classroom, Jim Marsalis of St. Martins Episcopal, Ira Nirenberg of the University of Chicago Laboratory School, Fan Disher of Mandeville High School, Bill Crombie of Rutgers University, and Claudia Winstead of Metairie Park Country Day School.
Registration and information may be obtained from the website http://msi.promotinglearning.com. Participants will receive a certificate for 18 hours of continuing learning units. Continental breakfast and full lunch will be provided each day. There is a registration fee of $90 until June 1.
The institutes have been organized by local mathematics and science teachers who have formed a nonprofit organization called Promoting Education for Lifelong Learning, Inc. (PELL, Inc.) to organize their work. Last year's institute had more than 100 educators from as far away as Ghana in West Africa learning and sharing ideas in statistics, biology, chemistry, physics, calculus, technology, and different teaching strategies for math and science. This year the institute expects to again have more than 100 participants.
